We, as a family, do a lot of camping, so easy, quick and good tasting food is always at the top of our list. When we camp we like simple foods that hopefully don’t make a mess. We have honestly never used our camper oven and we’ve had a camper for about 15 years now. Pudgy pies are a big hit in our family so we have become creative with them. It’s great, because a large portion of the time we already have a fire going and we can get everything together on a picnic table. Dishes are easy as you typically only have silverware, plates and the cooking trays.
Over the years we have tried multiple versions of “pudgy pies.” We have made traditional pudgy pies with cherry, apple and strawberry flavor. We have made caramel apple pudgy pies that were a fun change to our normal traditional apple pudgy pie. We have made strawberry shortcake that was a easy desert. See strawberry shortcake pudgy pie recipe here. Now, off desserts and onto actual food.
We made a pizza pudgy pie one night after trying to decide what to have for dinner. We had a pretty big lunch but still wanted more than brats over the fire. Yup brats….it’s a Wisconsin thing. We went shopping and got what we needed and came back to the campsite to work on our new recipe.
Ingredients:
- Pizza Dough (we got pre-made in the tube)
- Pizza Tomato Sauce
- Mozzarella Cheese
- Any Additional Toppings
Tools:
- Pudgy Pie Cooker (we used a double)
- Fly Deterrent/Plate Cover
- Grill for over Fire Pit or Complete Fire Pit with Grill Attached
- Small Cookie Sheet
- Spray or Butter
- Small Pizza cutter or Knife
Spread pizza dough over small cookie sheet and thin out. Use a spray or butter on your pudgy pie grill to keep from sticking. Spray more than what you might think, it doesn’t make it greasy but it makes clean up much easier. Wipe off any excess spray/butter so it’s not pooling in the corners. Once you can cover a pudgy pie maker with dough cut the dough in half. I like using a double pie maker, only because it takes less time to make dinner for two. We keep a plate under the excess pizza dough, so it doesn’t go onto the table.
Then put your sauce in the middle of the section on the pudgy pie grill. Remember not to put too much sauce because you have to seal the sides closed. By sealing the sides it keeps your pizza toppings inside the pudgy pie.
Now time to add the “toppings.” We add less of the cheese and more of the other toppings. The reason why we do this is so we can seal the edges and don’t lose all of our toppings out the sides. Fold the dough over the toppings to create a “pie.” Also, after they are cooked we pull the crusts apart, and add more cheese to the inside.
After you have your toppings on, pinch the edges to seal everything inside. You may not be able to get a complete tight seal around the entire edges, this is okay. Try as best as you can, this is why we don’t add a lot of cheese. Place the pudgy pie grill over the fire and coals, it will work better if you can have the fire burning for at least 30 minutes prior, but not necessary. You can use either, remember if you use the flame it will cook faster so check frequently so it doesn’t burn. Flip periodically so both sides get cooked evenly.
Once browned and the crust is cooked all of the way through remove from fire and place onto a plate. At this time you take a section that didn’t seal completely and open your “pudgy pie pizza” to add more cheese. The heat will melt the cheese nicely, and we also use extra pizza sauce to dip our pizza into
