We are a camping family; I personally have grown up camping and love it.  We have tried many things over the years from food, desserts, appetizers and drinks.  This is one of the kid’s favorite desserts for ice cream after dinner.  It’s simple and the kids can get involved and have the ability to make their own.  These pictures were taken by two girls of our family that decided everyone needs to know how to make this, so enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • Waffle Cones
  • Frozen Strawberries (easier for storage, we thaw them prior and cut them into mini marshmallow size)
  • Chocolate Chips (can use other chocolates, Andies Candies, Ghirradelli)
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Banana (cut into mini marshmallow size)
  • Favorite Ice Cream Flavor

Turn the cone on the side and fill about a third to a half full depending on how much you would like to add.  The hardest part is remembering you have ice cream to put in the cone when your done melting.

Wrap with aluminum foil, don’t squeeze too hard as the waffle cone will break.  We usually have multiple being made so we will write names with a marker on the foil.  No one wants to lose their masterpiece they just made. This makes it way easier with tired kids trying to remember which cone was theirs.

Place on a grate to the side of the fire.  We have used multiple versions of this depending on if you are home, camper camping or tent camping.  Here is an option you can use for home as a grill. You can also get the entire fire pit and grill here.  You can place directly over the flame if the fire is very low, you don’t want it directly over a large flame because the waffle cone will start to burn.

Leave it in place for about 3-5 minutes depending on the size of the fire and how long it has been burning.  We will check it after this amount of time to see if the chocolate is melting.  The chocolate chips will look un-melted, this is normal.  Once you start moving things around the chocolate chips will lose their shape and become more liquid.  Make sure you don’t keep it over the fire until the chocolate chips melt because they will burn.

Now here is the art of filling the cone with ice cream, everyone does this their own way. The kids love using an ice cream scooper that warms up with the heat from your hand, every scoop comes out amazing and it’s easy for them to use. You can stand the cone upright so everything goes to the bottom of the cone then put the ice cream on the top half of the cone.  You can hold it sideways and fill the other half with ice cream.  You can use a knife and spread the filling around the inside of the cone and fill inside of the ingredients.  Final step enjoy!
